Leave Me Alone: Tips and Tricks for Complying with Federal, State, and Local Leave Laws
by James Zissler and Deidra A. Nguyen of Littler Mendelson
Employers in Washington are required to juggle the requirements of numerous leave laws, including the Washington Family Leave Act, the Washington Family Care Act, and the Family Medical Leave Act. And those are the easy leave laws! There are also pregnancy leaves, domestic violence and sexual assault and stalking leaves, military spouse leaves, and mandatory paid sick leaves to worry about. This presentation will provide an overview of the leave laws applicable to Washington employers, including Seattle’s new sick and safe time ordinance, and provide practical guidance for responding to requests for leave or accommodation, determining eligibility of employees for particular leaves, effectively reinstating employees after leave, and understanding and avoiding liability.
