    The Aging Workforce

In 2014, SHRM and the SHRM Foundation received a 3-year grant from the Sloan Foundation to advance research and develop tools around the Aging Workforce. The goal of these resources is to help organizations understand and solve workforce aging issues that will grow over the next decade. SHRM and the Foundation have spent the past few years creating a series of practical resources that we can now use free-of-charge to prepare our own organizations for these demographic changes. But they won't make any difference if they aren't used. Please put these excellent tools to work in your own organization.

    Getting Talent Back To Work

Nearly 700,000 people are released from prison each year and are locked out of the job market. Those who have served their time should not be “re-sentenced” by employers, especially when businesses are experiencing a human capital crisis.

The Getting Talent Back to Work certificate is a multi-faceted program with the actionable knowledge and tools HR professionals, hiring managers, front-line supervisors, and other HR professionals need to attract, hire, and retain people with criminal records.

If you are SHRM certified (SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP) you may claim 10 professional development credits (PDCs) after earning your SHRM Foundation Getting Talent Back to Work certificate. Join business leaders & pledge to consider all qualified candidates. Washington State SHRM is proud to be a partner with YesVets and their other partner agencies (Employment Security Department, Washington Department of Veterans Affairs, Department of Commerce, and Washington State Military Transition Council).  As affiliates of the Washington State SHRM, all Washington State SHRM chapters (15) are also included in the partnership as YesVets Ambassadors.

We know that hiring veterans is not just good for our country and not just a way to repay them for their service, it is simply, GOOD FOR BUSINESS.  Military personnel have learned multiple skills and are experienced in transitioning to and from various tasks and responsibilities.  They are a skilled talent pool ready and able to work.  Help us increase the number of veteran hires in our state.

As of October 4, 2018, the 3,000th veteran was hired and there are now 778 participating YesVets employers.  We encourage all businesses to become a YesVets employers and continue hiring veterans.

    Onward to Opportunity

The Onward to Opportunity Program at Joint Base Lewis-McChord offers a no-cost, hybrid learning experience combining classroom interaction with an online learning experience. Starting with an engaging week of classroom training we will then shift focus. Each of the five following weeks will include one day of classroom experience focused on personal development, employment seeking skills, employer engagement activities, and site visits, with the rest of the week devoted to self-paced study. During the course you will have an opportunity to practice your networking and interviewing skills while building your professional network. During this course while you are working through the certification training and participating in the professional development activities you will also work with our national partners through Hire Heroes USA to build your resume and prepare you for interviews. Although the opportunity to network locally has extremely high value, the opportunity to interview with our national employer partners and gain some valuable network growth is highly valuable to individuals that might be planning to leave the local area.

Through site visits and networking receptions, participants will meet and engage with local and national employer partners. This is a great opportunity to gain some insider perspective on careers in the private sector. As a participant in this program you will learn how to leverage this opportunity to build your own professional network while you are preparing for your certification.
