    Kari Hanson,
    When Employees Cross the Line

    Bio: Kari joined for the Washington State Office of the Attorney General’s Labor and Personnel Division from 2003 through August 2019. While working as an Assistant Attorney General, Kari represented a wide range of state agencies on employment and labor matters, including the Department of Corrections, the Washington State Patrol, the Legislature, the Department of Natural Resources, the Washington State Fruit Commission, and several community colleges. She provided litigation and advice services on diverse legal topics, including employee misconduct; she has reviewed and advised on hundreds of workplace investigations.

    Summary: Kari will walk participants through the difficult employee investigation process, best practices, and approaches. Additional program information to come!

    Kate Tylee Herz & Christine Hawkins,
    Paid Family Medical Leave in Washington: Navigating Tricky Waters

    Bio: Kate Tylee Herz, from Davis Wright Tremaine LLP, has significant experience conducting workplace investigations and representing clients in federal and state courts against allegations of discrimination, hostile work environment, sexual harassment, wage and commission disputes, wrongful termination, retaliation, and claims under the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA), the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Title VII, and Washington Law Against Discrimination (WLAD).

    Christine Hawkins, from David Wright Tremaine LLP, assists clients who are restructuring their employee benefits and compensations programs to address changes in law, minimize risk, and offer greater investment flexibility. She regularly advises companies on a wide range of employee benefits and ERISA matters, including plan operational and non-amender failures, mergers and acquisitions due diligence, multiemployer withdrawal liability, healthcare reform compliance, and fringe benefit programs.

    Summary: Kate will walk you through the labyrinth of PFML in Washington. She will provide an overview of the program and will dive into some of the common issues employers are grappling with:  (1) How does this work with other protected leaves?  (2) What does this mean for our short-term and long-term disability plans? (3) How do we handle supplemental benefits? (4) Do employees have a right to benefits continuation and job restoration?

    Catharine Morisset,
    Employment Litigation and Enforcement Trends

    Bio: Catharine is a partner in the Fisher Phillips Seattle office. Her practice focuses on representing local and national employers in litigation in state and federal courts, on appeal, and also before the EEOC and similar state agencies in all aspects of workplace law. Catharine uses her litigation experience to work closely with clients to provide effective preventive counseling and workforce training. This includes regularly advising and training clients on drug tests, hiring, wage-hour compliance, leaves, reasonable accommodations, investigations, contracts, discipline, terminations, and layoffs. She is an accomplished trainer and speaker, and is often invited to address human resources and business leaders across the Pacific Northwest.

    Summary: Catharine will touch on current employment litigation and enforcement trends with huge impacts on Washington state employers. Additional program information to come!
