Marianne K. Ozmun-Wells Bio
Marianne K. Ozmun-Wells is the Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Manager for the Department of Social and Health Services Economic Services Administration. She has served in social justice roles for 28 years in two states. From overseeing a media-arts based mentoring program for Native youth on an urban reservation, to serving as Housing Director for the largest poverty advocacy organization in Tucson, Arizona. A Washington state transplant, Marianne has worked for DSHS for 17 years. She is one of four state employees certified as both a Diversity Professional and Diversity Executive. In addition to serving as the EDI Manager, Marianne teaches for the Society for Diversity specializing in: Race, Power and Privilege; LGBTQ Inclusion; Disability, and Accommodations; Religion in the Workplace, and Unconscious Bias. A wife, mom, wonderer, wanderer, social justice warrior--empiricist, idealist, historical realist! Marianne lives with her wife of 25 years and their 14-year-old daughter in Olympia.
At the end of this workshop, attendees will:
- Understand much of the current terminology describing the LGBTQ+ community and recognize certain associated symbols.
- Recognize gendered language and understand appropriate pronoun usage.
- Know key terms to avoid
- Learn some statistics that help frame why this information important.
- Learn about some of the relevant associated laws and policies.
- Have a few best practices for workplace communication and inclusion.
- Have a list of resources.
