Lonnie L. Spikes Jr. is a Senior HR Consultant for the WA State Department of Licensing. Lonnie is the expert in Leaves and Workers Compensation (WC) Claims management for his agency. He also serves as the back-up ADA Specialist, giving him insight on the collaboration between ADA, FMLA, WC, and other protected leaves. He holds a Masters of Science degree in Human Resource Management and is SPHR certified. He will be the speaker at our February meeting. The program will review:

    • Federal and Washington State local leave laws and rules
    • Employee role and responsibilities
    • Employer roles and responsibilities
    • A total Q&A

There are two main challenges for HR and management regarding maintaining and producing an evolving workforce. The first is “Hiring (the) Right” people and the second is “Keeping them” (producing). An integral part of the second challenge is being able to manage the injured or ill worker.  With the changing dynamics of both the public and private sectors, and so much emphasis placed on production, all it takes is one mismanaged absence to degrade the work and morale of an entire unit in a short span of time.

This program is a firsthand account of what it took for HR to change the culture of an organization by giving its management empowerment for the one of the most difficult of duties, the management of employees on protected leaves.
